About Us

The Department of Archaeology & Museums, Haryana is a premier department came into existence in the shape of a cell under the Control of Education department in the year 1969 and as an independent department in the year 1972 with a small staff and meager budget. The nature of functioning of this department is technical.

It conducts archaeological excavation and explorations, protection and conservation of Proto-historical, medieval and historical monuments ites and remains from the research point of view on the one hand and publishes research reports of excavated sites and explorations of the districts, booklets, folders etc and organizes exhibitions including other museum activities and prepares replicas of ancient sculptures for sale to acquaint researchers and general public with their rich ancient heritage on the other.

The functions and activities of the department are regulated under the following State and Central Acts and Rules framed therein:-

  • The Punjab ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains  Act-1964 (State Act)
  • The Antiquities and Art Treasures Act 1972 (Central Act)
  • The Indian Treasures Trove Act- 1878(Central Act)
  • The Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act-1958(Central Act)

The budget provision for the year 2016-2017 of this department is Rs. 1 Crore 7 Lakh 60 Thousand on Non-Plan and Rs. 25 Crore 17 Lakh 30 Thousand on plan side under the following plan scheme:-


  • The exhibition entitled Haryana through the ages was organized at the time of world   Heritage Day at the Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh.
  • An exhibition on the monumental wealth of Haryana was organized at War Memorial Complex, Kala Amb, Panipat at the time of its inauguration.
  • Rare antiquities, discovered from the excavation at Banawali were sent through Archaeological Survey of India to display in the Festival of India at London and Moscow.
  • Unique discoveries of Kunal excavations were displayed at National Museum, New Delhi at the time of World Archaeological Congress on their demand.
  • Special exhibitions on new discoveries were organized at the time of Geeta Jayanti at Kurukshetra.
  • Rare and important antiquities of Kunal, Banawali and Agroha were sent to the Archaeological Survey of India to exhibit at the time of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) Archaeological Conference at New Delhi.
  • The Department has participated in International Trade Fair in New Delhi and displayed a translight showing archaeological material and other achievements of the department to popularize the State’s heritage and archaeological wealth.
  • The Department has organized a photo-exhibition of archaeological material at Kurukshetra on the eve of Geeta Jayanti



State Museum, Panchkula

The Department is going to set up a State level Museum at Sector 5 Panchkula, where the office of this Department will also be located. The matter of finalization of Architect for this museum is under process. Rare antiquities and the priceless artifacts of the collection of State Archaeology will be displayed here.

Site Museum, Bhima Devi, Pinjore

The remains of ancient temple plinth of Panchayat Plan, Stone/ sculptures and architectural members of C. 8th to 12th Century A. D. have been unearthed as the result of scientific clearness work at Bhima Devi Temple, Pinjore. A site museum is set up to display the exposed artifacts. It was constructed through Haryana Tourism Corporation.
